When we focus on gratitude, we typically think of what we personally feel thankful for. This is an amazing first step! Research has shown that a consistent gratitude practice breeds positivity and happiness in our lives.

But what happens when we flip things around and focus on spreading gratitude to others? Your loved ones, your children, your friends and neighbors, your co-workers or teachers, and even complete strangers!

When you do this, not only will you brighten someone else’s day —but you’ll personally feel good after spreading such positivity out in the world.

Today, we’re here to inspire you with our favorite ways to spread gratitude to others!

1. Make plans with a friend

Spending time with a friend is one of life’s greatest gifts. Show one of your friends how much you appreciate him or her by reaching out and making plans to do something together!

2. Establish a gratitude practice with your family

Whether it’s upon waking up, at the dinner table, or before going to bed—set a time to share with each other what you’re grateful for each day. Practicing gratitude together will help solidify this into a daily routine, making your home a more positive and uplifting space.

3. Say thank you

A simple thank you goes a l-o-n-g way! We’re talking about showing appreciation for each and every kind deed—from the big to the small. People love to feel appreciated and noticed. While it often gets overlooked, saying thank you is the easiest way to spread gratitude to others!

4. Keep it positive on social media

We all strive to use social media less, but the fact is that most of us are on there from time to time each day. Why not use it as a platform to spread gratitude? When you see an inspirational quote or an uplifting post, send it privately to a friend or tag your loved ones in the comments!

5. Participate in random act of kindness

This just might be the most fun way to spread gratitude! Treat the next person in line to their coffee, buy lunch for military and service personnel when you see them at a restaurant, give someone your aisle seat on the airplane, or donate to a good cause. The ideas are endless!

6. Volunteer to help others

Getting out in the community and helping others is a wonderful way to show people they matter. Whether you’re volunteering at places like school, your local hospital, and the food bank—or participating in a fundraiser to support a charity, you’re getting out there for a very good cause and inspiring others to do the same. Those on the receiving end will be so appreciative of the time and energy you spent!

7. Smile often

It’s quick! And easy! Starting now, let’s make a promise to smile more often—to those in our own homes, to people at the grocery store, and everyone in between. You’ll naturally spread more gratitude and kindness around the world. Plus, when you smile, your brain releases endorphins which, in turn, makes YOU feel happy and lowers stress levels! So why not?

This month, we hope we’ve inspired you to not only practice gratitude within but to also spread gratitude to family, friends, and complete strangers. Let us know in the comments below which tip from the list above you’ll start on today!
