Hello! I’m Rachel Leslie of Polka Square Design. I have the privilege of working with the Day Designer team on graphic art. Today, I’m honored to be a guest blogger and share about a fun way for you to make this Easter holiday even more beautiful! Read on for a fun idea about how to decorate Easter eggs this year.

Recently, my Instagram feed has been an endless trickle of color. From perfectly styled images of daily planners, to watercolor calligraphy that looks like it is dancing right off the page, to all things Easter and Spring. It occurred to me that if I were to combine all of these into one, I could really have some fun!

Now, hear me when I say I am not a painter. My training is strictly on the computer…graphic art and studio art are not the same. Thus, my confidence level going into this creative challenge was mediocre, at best.

Which cover design would I paint? Decisions, decisions…so, like any amateur painter might do, I just got started. After all, wasn’t it the wise Mark Twain who said, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started”?

I set up my workspace using materials I already had, which included:
Simply Simmons Synthetic Brushes (In varying styles)
Master’s Touch Watercolor Palette
Sargent Art Liquid Metal
Fresh, white eggs
Cup of room temperature water
Paper towels
Washi Tape

While I used watercolor paints, I kept them pretty thick to avoid a trail of tears running off the round surface of the egg. I had the artwork open on my computer to allow quick reference as I painted each element.

One of my listed materials is washi tape. Really, what I needed was the perfect size “stand” for the easter eggs and this acted as such. Use what works best for you!

Once I started, I couldn’t stop. Each design was a process in and of itself, but the joy of color mixing combined with my shaky hand attempting to paint the designs was a welcomed challenge.

There are obvious imperfections, those annoying spots where control+z or a quick tap of the “delete” key would have come in handy. Perhaps that was the most unique part. Getting out of my comfort zone by trying something new helped further confirm my field of choice while appreciating those who are gifted in other areas.

Thanks, Day Designer, for the inspiration. These Easter eggs just might be too pretty to crack this year!
